THE ROLE

Greenskeeping is the science of sustainability plus business strategy. A Greenskeeper is a sustainability expert who creates the strategy, provides guidance and leads every part of the business towards our people + planet goals. Our Greenskeepers are a hopeful bunch who start by painting a picture of a better future and then work collaboratively across the organization to prove that business can be done differently. Reporting to our Sr. Director of Greenskeeping, the Greenskeeping Manager – based in our San Francisco, office – will partner across our brand, product development, supply chain, and sales teams to implement our people and planet goals.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Greenskeeping brand leadership

  • Lead cross-functional teams to build buy in and ensure delivery of strategic global sustainability programmes at brand-level including ingredients and transparency, packaging and waste, deforestation and science-based carbon reduction targets.
  • Partner with brand teams to develop and implement people and planet goals and aspirations
  • Assert a clear point of view to brand teams and in technical forums
  • Partner externally with NGOs and experts to inform our Greenskeeping approach and accelerate systemic change

Lead Greenskeeping across product value chain

  • Use a lifecycle approach to advise product and business managers on ingredient and packaging decisions to achieve brand product improvement targets
  • Identify improvement areas for carbon, water and waste minimization and integrate into product pipeline and value chain
  • Identify emerging sustainability trends and work with product experience and design teams to ensure products are sustainable by design
  • Inform procurement priorities on ingredients and packaging to support sustainability strategy and work with our supply chain partners to ensure our factory continues to be a beacon for sustainability
  • Oversee relevant certifications including Leaping Bunny and RSPO

Internal & external engagement

  • Lead sustainability education and engagement with your internal stakeholders to inspire action amongst our teams
  • Deliver timely quarterly reporting on our progress towards brand-level people and planet goals
  • Translate complex information to a broad audience including internal teams, retail partners and external organizations

QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE

  • 5-7 years of experience working in sustainability (product sustainability preferred)

REQUIREMENTS: (what candidate will be expected to be capable of below is a sample from our M+M roles):

  • collaborative + team oriented
  • attention to detail + strong analytical skills
  • energetic and creative with a bias for action (because our planet can’t wait!)
  • knowledge of sustainability reporting requirements is desirable
  • desirable expertise should include sustainability aspects relevant to our business and the product development process:
  • product sustainability – claims development, packaging, lifecycle analysis, green chemistry
  • responsible sourcing – supplier engagement, traceability and transparency

EDUCATION:

  • scientific background preferred (chemistry, environmental or material sciences)
