Position Summary
The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to enhance and protect the continued strength of the American Express brand through public relations; corporate social responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG); communications; and colleague engagement. American Express has a formal ESG strategy with three pillars (i) Promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, (ii) Build Financial Confidence, and (iii) Advance Climate Solutions. The ESG & Sustainability Manager role will support the Advance Climate Solutions pillar, which is comprised of goals and objectives to enhance our operations and capabilities to meet customer and community needs in the transition to a low-carbon future. Our goals include a commitment to net-zero emissions globally by 2035 in alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology, assessing and enhancing the management of climate-related risks and opportunities, piloting low-carbon product innovations, and providing at least $10 million in philanthropic support to advance climate action and solutions in communities.
The ESG & Sustainability Manager will report to the Director of ESG within the Office of Corporate Social Responsibility interacting closely with this team and CA&C department leaders. They will support the company’s global ESG and Sustainability strategy, with a specific focus on the Advance Climate Solutions pillar, implementation of the company’s net-zero emissions target, ESG disclosures (CDP, SBTi, etc.), climate partnerships, ESG Working Groups, and other climate initiatives across the company. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic, high-impact team that interacts with colleagues globally, touching nearly every aspect of the American Express business.
Responsibilities
- ESG Strategy
- Support Advance Climate Solutions goals, including enterprise coordination and implementation of the company’s net-zero emissions target (in alignment with SBTi).
- Assist with data monitoring and systems for tracking ESG and climate focused disclosures and commitments, including evolving value chain and scope 3 emissions to meet goals.
- Partner with colleagues in CA&C, Global Real Estate & Workplace Experience, Global Procurement, Legal, Investor Relations, Treasury, Global Risk & Compliance, and other business units to monitor and implement ESG goals related to climate.
- Monitor ESG and climate change industry trends, best practices, regulations, and peer benchmarking to inform ongoing climate, target-setting disclosure, and reporting.
- ESG Reporting & Disclosure
- Support annual environmental and climate-related ESG reporting and disclosures including in the ESG Report (in alignment with GHG Protocol, GRI, SASB, SDG’s, etc.), Proxy, and other non-financial disclosures.
- Manage annual CDP response and coordinate GHG inventory and third-party assurance with relevant business units and consultants,
- Engage internal ESG content owners and subject matter experts to collect and validate ESG data and information.
- Provide technical support and assistance with content and data related to regulatory requests, ESG bond requirements, and related business unit needs.
- Process Management & Engagement
- Oversight of third-party consultants to manage execution of projects and ensure timely and quality deliverables.
- Engage with industry organizations as needed including SBTi, CDP, RE100, World Economic Forum, and others.
- Develop/identify data management tools and processes to track, monitor, and evaluate progress and performance against ESG goals.
- Assist with ESG Steering Committee and administration of ESG Working Groups.
- Develop decks, presentation materials, and represent AXP’s climate and sustainability initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
- Support incoming climate-related investor and client requests and coordinate with appropriate business units as needed.

Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in a corporate ESG or sustainability role.
- Subject matter expertise and experience with climate and sustainability topics (net-zero, GHG accounting, etc.), frameworks (CDP, SBTi, TCFD, GRI, SASB, SDG’s, GHG protocol, etc.) and related project/program implementation.
- Bachelors’ degree (required) and Master’s degree (preferred) in relevant field including Sustainability Management, Environmental Studies, Sustainable Finance, Business Administration, etc.
- Strategic thinking and analytical capabilities. Ideal candidate will demonstrate extensive technical expertise and leadership in designing and implementing systems for monitoring and managing climate-related ESG data, goals, KPIs, and company objectives.
- Strong project management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects and priorities, meet deadlines, and work flexibility in a fast-paced, dynamic, and deadline-oriented environment. Must work well under pressure with a high degree of composure and professionalism.
- Collaborative mindset, exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, and ability to work cross-functionally and globally with internal and external stakeholders including senior leadership.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Global financial services experience a plus.

- Ongoing Workplace Flexibility: Full-time position, which will temporarily be work-from-home with the option to voluntarily work in the office. due to COVID-19.
