Job Description

As a member of Blue Shield’s Corporate Citizenship team, the Sustainability Analyst will help lead the company’s efforts to become a model for being a socially responsible health insurer. Based in Oakland, CA, the Sustainability Analyst will report directly to the Sustainability Program Manager and will be responsible for helping to drive progress against the company’s next generation sustainability goals. The Sustainability Analyst will operate cross-functionally with many different departments within the company, most frequently with Corporate Real Estate, Global Business Services, Corporate and Internal Communications and Law.

Responsibilities

The Sustainability Analyst will focus on supporting enterprise efforts to reduce our environmental footprint and identify meaningful savings that contribute to our culture of affordability. Responsibilities include:

  • Sustainability Reporting & Measurement: Develop and maintain progress reports on Blue Shield’s environmental impacts for greenhouse gas, water, waste and provide an inventory report of key sustainability metrics. Support the submission of the CDP disclosure questionnaire.
  • Supplier Sustainability: Partner with Global Business Services to engage strategic, IT, and non-strategic suppliers on Blue Shield’s newly created supplier sustainability program.
  • He/she/they will establish and implement supplier sustainability requirements, onboard suppliers in greenhouse gas reporting and goal setting, cocreate training sessions and support tools for suppliers, and create and maintain internal reporting dashboard and metrics.
  • Efficiency Measures: Partner with Corporate Real Estate to develop and drive a roadmap of efficiency and sustainability initiatives in alignment with our sustainability goals. The roadmap will include initiatives and best practices related to energy reduction, renewable energy, water use reduction, and zero waste strategies.
  • Internal and External Communications: Strengthen the communication of the company’s environmental sustainability journey.
  • Employee Engagement: Support the development and execution of an employee engagement plan to provide employees with opportunities to learn about sustainability and participate in environment-focused events. Whether it’s recycling, reducing our power demand, or increasing their sustainable commuting options, this incumbent will support various initiatives that empower employees to play a role in reducing our costs and impact.

Knowledge, Experience and Education

  • Possesses a bachelor’s degree with at least 4-7 years of relevant cross-functional, cross disciplinary experience or an equivalent of education and experience. Supply chain experience in a corporate setting is preferred.
