Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
This role is responsible for leading sustainability and ESG (environmental, social and governance) efforts across Clearwater Paper. As a key member of the Corporate Environmental, Health and Safety Team, this role will lead the development of the annual sustainability report, interface directly with ESG rating agencies, and partner with industry trade associations to enable a scientifically supported sustainability approach. The Manager will directly interface with mill leadership, EHS managers, project engineers, and members of the organization’s Senior Leadership Team to execute the company’s sustainability vision. The role requires a solid understanding of current sustainability trends, the opportunities within the pulp and paper industry, and professional curiosity to identify and implement best practices. This role is highly visible and will be responsible for leading the next chapter in our sustainability journey.

Strategic Leadership

  • Support the implementation of a multi-year sustainability strategy that aligns with the company’s vision for sustainable operations.
  • Review, interpret, and communicate sustainability and ESG requirements to the organization.
  • Raise organizational awareness and guide response efforts.
  • Quantify the investment needed to make a step change in sustainability
  • Provide routine updates on key operational metrics that drive sustainability performance.
  • Champion proactive, positive relationships with environmental agencies, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), and key trade associations. Serve as the company representative with
  • industry organizations focused on sustainability/ESG activities.

Sustainability / ESG Reporting

  • Lead the development and publication of the annual sustainability report.
  • Serve as the point of contact on external ESG rating matters.
  • Review and complete sustainability/ESG requests from customers.
  • Own the sustainability portion of the Clearwater Paper website; ensure routine review, refresh, and enhancement to external communication of our latest ESG efforts.
  • Review and identify sustainability best practices for re-application.
  • Review, monitor and refine the company sustainability reporting consistent with current ESG trends.

Project Management

  • Collaborate with site-based resources to identify and implement sustainability projects consistent with the company’s ESG strategy with a particular focus on greenhouse gas reduction.
  • Identify third-party solution providers to quantify and implement meaningful projects to reduce our sustainability footprint.
  • Construct comprehensive project plans that systematically identify the necessary steps, time, and resources to achieve the Company’s ESG objectives, utilize these plans to track progress and adjust as needed.
  • Visit mill operations to support projects, monitor performance and improvement plans.

Training & Organizational Skill Building

  • Create and deliver educational and training materials on sustainability/ESG to Clearwater’s functional teams.
  • Coach the CLW organization to ensure the continual improvement in ESG ratings.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to site based EHS managers, project engineers and site leadership on sustainability projects.

Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline
Minimum 5 years environmental experience required with thorough working knowledge of pulp and paper processes preferred
Minimum 3 years of experience in leading and executing sustainability initiatives.
ESG strategy development /work with rating agencies strongly preferred.
Leadership in completion of an annual sustainability report.

  • Ability to identify and lead process improvement initiatives functionally and operationally applying knowledge of sustainability, ESG ratings, and business priorities.

Illustrative Essential Functions

  • Must be able to read and interpret rules and regulations.
  • Must be physically capable of standing, walking, and climbing stairs up to 8-10 hours per day.
  • Must be able to work in a hot, dusty, humid, and noisy mill environment around high-speed equipment.
  • Must be able to adjust work hours to support the safety and environmental needs of a 24/7 facility.
  • Some domestic travel required (approx. 35%)
