Position Overview:

ClimateVoice aims to leverage the power of corporate influence from climate-positive companies to help win crucial climate policy battles. Our unique mission is to mobilize the voice of the workforce to urge companies to go “all in” on climate, both in business practices and in policy advocacy. We believe employee engagement is the key lever to propel corporate action. When employees speak up as a group, and urge companies to advocate on climate policy, it catalyzes change at the highest levels.

The Co-Executive Director will provide strategic leadership and direction for executing on current programming and operations, explore new opportunities for organizational growth and sustainability, and amplify the voice and impact of the organization. Initially, this role will partner closely with Bill Weihl, the founding Executive Director.  As the organization grows and pivots to its next chapter, our intent is for this candidate to become sole ED within 12 months.

Summary of key attributes and expertise:

Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to develop and drive strategic vision for high-impact enterprises and to communicate that impact publicly and with funders and other stakeholders; a strong track record of recruiting and motivating teams to drive change; and experience developing and maintaining partnerships and collaborations with diverse groups and organizations. Candidates should also have extensive experience in the policy and climate change ecosystem; a broad understanding of the different players; as well as the power and political dynamics that span large companies, business groups, leading NGOs, and state and federal government.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Shared between Co-EDs):

Organizational Leadership

  • Inspire and lead the organization to fulfill its mission.
  • Refine and promote a clear strategy and vision for increasing corporate engagement on climate policy, focused on influence from the workforce.
  • Build on CV’s success with corporate accountability campaigns, media engagement, and employee organizing to motivate companies to go “all in” on climate  –  expanding the range of tactics as needed to accelerate progress.
  • Empower senior leadership to set and achieve ambitious goals; work with leadership to ensure the effective implementation of CV’s core programs and campaigns; and guide professional development for all staff.

Spokesperson & External Relationships

  • Serve as the primary public voice for CV and its mission – with the media, funders, partners, corporate employees, and students – through speaking engagements, social media, and traditional media channels.
  • Represent the CV brand through thought leadership – participating in relevant policy discussions with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Seek out and facilitate new partnerships and collaborations to promote and accelerate the impact of CV’s mission.
  • Ensure demographic and geographic diversity in the partnerships and communities engaged.

Organization Management

  • Serve as the Project Director for Tides: Ensure compliance with rules and regulations, assess potential risks related to new organizational initiatives, and take action on all notices and changes in project procedures.
  • Embed values and champion the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion across both organizational culture and program implementation.
  • Develop and nurture a strong Advisory Board to inform and guide good decision-making for CV’s current and future direction. Support Advisory Board meetings and committees, maintain frequent and regular communications.

Financial Oversight & Fundraising

  • With support from the Operations Director and fiscal sponsor, oversee financial and budget activities to ensure long-term financial stability for CV; co-develop annual budget, report on status of financial health and revenue planning to Advisory Board, and take proactive action with planning for cash flow or revenue gaps.
  • Co-lead fundraising efforts; maintain and cultivate relationships with existing and new funders; develop fundraising strategies for diversifying revenue streams; contribute to prospecting, grant writing, presentations and pitches, proposal submissions, and reporting

Education and/or Experience Preferred:

PhD or Master’s degree in a relevant field or 10+ years of relevant work experience strongly preferred. Strong record of leading growing organizations. Demonstrated experience leading, influencing, and driving change.

Key Attributes and Expertise:

Candidates must possess a passion for addressing climate change and social justice issues, ideally with formal training or on-the-job-experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Causes of climate change and the range of technical solutions needed to address it
  • Corporate climate strategy – including direct footprint reductions, innovation, and policy engagement
  • Just transition to a zero-carbon economy
  • Political and communications issues related to the climate crisis
  • The ecosystem of public/private organizations participating in the dialogue

ClimateVoice’s work is based on analyses that make it clear we need strong public policy to achieve our climate goals, on evidence that obstruction by some sectors of the business community is one of the main obstacles to policy progress, and on the belief that “pro-climate” companies have a responsibility to advocate for policy to help counter the obstruction from other companies. We are looking for someone able to demonstrate a commitment to ClimateVoice’s mission, theory of change, and its staff by embracing the following core values:

  • Accountability: Taking ownership for individual participation and tasks
  • Diversity: Encouraging and listening to ideas from all cultures, backgrounds, genders, ages, and experiences
  • Reciprocal Improvement: Working to provide and receive constructive feedback for personal and organizational betterment
  • Good Intent: Leading with and assuming first that colleagues have positive motive
  • Disagreement Then Commitment: Robust and respectful debate and discussion about the best path forward, with an acceptance of and participation in a decided course of action

Applicants should demonstrate excellent technological skills, fluency, and/or the ability to learn applications such as Slack, Basecamp, Google Apps, and other relevant programs as necessary.

Organizational Relationship:

This position reports to the Advisory Board, and works in direct partnership with our founding Executive Director. Our intent is to shift this position to being sole ED within 12 months, including all management responsibilities. Our founding ED will then transition to serving as a board member and advisor, helping in other ways as needed.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to work with electronic devices, like computers and telephones, for extended periods of time – heavily focused on screen interactions.

Work Environment:

This position is fully remote and will require consistent, frequent communication and collaboration with a fully remote team. Occasional travel may be required to attend in-person meetings, conferences, and events.
