Position Overview:

The Company:
Descartes Labs helps organizations whose success depends on the scientific analysis of observable, physical world events. We are the leading provider of geospatial analytics that create actionable intelligence by strengthening our customers’ proprietary data with models of the Earth. Our solutions create new sources of environmental sustainability and operational advantage and foresight for agriculture, consumer packaged goods (CPG), mining, and government users by combining machine intelligence and domain expertise into a complete operational solution.

Descartes Labs is proud to be a remote-first, deliberately distributed organization that recognizes that people have different needs and motivations for building a life and career that matters and works for them. For this reason, we are open to our employees working from any location, in a way that enhances their well-being, productivity, and role. We focus on helping our employees produce positive outcomes and we recognize that the path to getting there will look different for different people.

The Role:
Descartes Labs’ Science and Technology Solutions (STS) Sustainability team is focused on achieving positive global change through corporate climate action. We engage our CPG, agriculture, and government customers with products and services to address their most difficult sustainable supply chain challenges.

The Sustainability Partnerships and Programs Manager is a new role created to recognize the fact that solving global-scale sustainability challenges requires deep collaboration with a complex stakeholder ecosystem. You will have responsibility for developing and executing strategic engagement with key sustainability stakeholders spanning the public and private sectors, as well as non-profit organizations and academic institutions, in support of enabling our sustainability products, solutions, and customers. As a member of the STS team, you represent Descartes Labs’ sustainability vision to existing and new partners, and you seek opportunities to scale our impact by identifying collaborators with complementary skills and expertise. In partnership with our Product team, you align us to partners that grow adoption and credibility of our products and services. Broadly and in partnership with Descartes Labs’ Head of Social Impact, you articulate the value of and seek opportunities to advocate for the role of remote sensing in measuring and monitoring sustainability solutions at scale, helping Descartes Labs establish and maintain a leadership position in this dynamic space.

Your Impact

  • Collaborate with Product, STS, Sales, and Head of Social Impact to identify the critical ecosystem partners (non-profit organizations, government agencies, regulators, companies, and academic research groups) that enable our existing and planned sustainability offerings.
  • Develop and execute a stakeholder engagement strategy to address near- and long-term product goals.
  • Lead our efforts to engage critical partners by establishing shared goals and supporting activities; engage our technical team as appropriate to reflect credibility and understanding of potential partners’ areas of focus.
  • Operationally manage existing sustainability partnerships and engagements; report internally on impact and progress to goals.
  • Collaborate with marketing to ensure visibility to and Descartes Labs presence, participation, and influence in relevant external coalitions, events, and activities.
In all activities, ensure strong emphasis on remote sensing and global scale geospatial data analysis as a value proposition for scaling up sustainability solutions.
  • Support activities that build strategic partners’ capacity in remote sensing and geospatial data analysis, including collaboration on select platform engagements through the Descartes
  • Labs Impact Science program.
  • Track relevant legislation in the US and abroad that impacts the demand and adoption of our sustainability solutions.

What You Bring

  • Excitement for creating positive global change through corporate climate action.
  • 4+ years of experience in a corporate sustainability role or account/relationship management role at a non-profit organization with a focus on sustainability, environmental and social governance, and/or sustainable development.
  • Demonstrated partnership management experience within the sustainability space including value engineering, negotiation, and program/project management.
  • Familiarity with developing regulation around carbon compliance markets including corporate GHG accounting and science-based target setting, as well as relevant reporting frameworks (e.g. the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures).
  • Some understanding of geospatial and/or remote sensing technology, products and data.
  • Some familiarity with the application of machine learning methods to remotely sensed data preferred.
  • Flexible team player with the ability to work and communicate effectively at all levels of an organization – both internally and externally.
  • Ability to digest and communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.

Who You Are

  • Curious. You are always exploring and experimenting, interested in why and how, seeking not only to understand but to make work and the world better. You enthusiastically share your learning with others and actively seek information and knowledge.
  • Conscientious. You are determined, always keep your promises, and are forward thinking. Principled and integrous, you take your commitments seriously.
  • Humble. Unpretentious and self-aware, you cultivate compassion for others and take responsibility for your mistakes. Egos are barriers to doing the best work and always learning.
  • Open and Inclusive. You are receptive and interested in new ideas and perspectives, even when those perspectives don’t agree with your views. You value and respect difference and create ways for all people to contribute to the organization.
  • Collaborative. You know it takes a team to get anything accomplished and you actively and inclusively work across the organization. You listen intently and openly and are always focused first on creating the best results.
