Position Overview:

Job Summary

Flagstar is seeking a Sustainability Manager to be a key member of the Flagstar environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and governance (ESG) Team. The Flagstar ESG Team, as part of the Corporate Responsibility team, is growing and requires outstanding, innovative, and engaging professionals to join our team. The purpose of this position is to manage and support the identification and implementation of company-wide sustainability initiatives and interface with pertinent stakeholders. Serves as project manager for large and complex sustainability projects, both for Flagstar branches and headquarters properties. Responsible for the overall execution to include design, budget, schedule, and projected community and climate impacts. May be responsible for developing policies and plans associated with sustainability. Assists in the bidding process, if needed, for professional services and contracts. Interacts with relevant internal and external stakeholders to advance sustainability for Flagstar. Develops content and reports to support VP ESG & Sustainability Director. Reviews specifications and obtains quotes for a variety of goods and services associated with sustainability efforts. This role requires significant cross-functional interaction and coalition building experience.

Pay Range: $71,600.00 – $87,947.00 – $132,600.00

Job Responsibilities:

Data Collection & Reporting

  • Establish, track, and report performance data and metrics relative to sustainability goals.
  • Jointly track and own organizational environmental sustainability data and support facilitation of its accurate storage and reporting.

 

External & Internal Communication

  • Provide perspective on carbon and commodity exchanges and credit generation for voluntary projects.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on a wide range of environmental sustainability aspects, including methods for greenhouse gas emission reduction, performance benchmarks, feasibility, capital spend, and all operational elements of decarbonization execution.
  • Build internal network and manage sub committees and working groups in support of sustainability initiatives.
  • Communicate and provide direct engagement with project teams and company leadership to promote sustainability programs.
  • Support development of training programs to further sustainability initiatives and educate employees; collaborate with Training / Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Support, engage, and mentor Green Team as well as others to enhance staff development.
  • Develop relationships with sustainability related subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, manufacturers, designers, and clients to advance common goals.
  • Work cross-functionally to operationalize the program’s strategy across the enterprise by partnering with leaders in other business areas and corporate functions.
  • Engage with industry partners, associations, and companies to develop sustainability strategies.
  • Support strategy to raise awareness of sustainability commitments and progress to stakeholders.

Project Identification & Scoping

  • Develop innovative programs, share learnings, and contribute to the evolution of sustainability strategy across the organization.
  • Identify and lead projects focused on sustainable energy and decarbonization, including areas of cost and carbon abatement, technologies, and operations.
  • Based on understanding of environmental hotspots, provide research and evaluation of new products, services, technologies, and processes to ensure maximum improvement in environmental performance with minimal incremental investment.
  • Oversee and support the preparation of sustainability improvement business cases and proposals to an agreed standard with appropriate sign off providing Flagstar with opportunities to improve the sustainability performance of the operations.
  • Responsible for formalizing the scope, obtaining quotes, performing project implementation, analysis and obtaining project approval.

Project Management

  • Partner with procurement to engage suppliers on environmentally preferable purchasing efforts, and to help them calculate and reduce Flagstar’s supply chain emissions.
  • Oversee development of comprehensive project schedules to ensure operational improvement projects are completed on time and on budget.
  • Serve as project manager on a range of assigned projects, providing progress updates, issue resolution and stakeholder engagement, site visits, field reports, document reviews, punch lists, and other project records from consultants and contractors. Manage project closeouts and recaps for stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain accreditations in a green building rating system.
  • Strive to ensure that global sustainability standards are applied throughout facilities which are considered in scope.
  • Develop, update, communicate, and strive to implement energy efficiency standards, water efficiency standards and best in class waste and recycling processes.
  • Provide leadership to influence positive change and innovation to advance best practices and opportunities.
  • Drive continuous system and process improvement.
  • Support ESG and Corporate Responsibility teams in executing broader strategy and program.
  • Assist internal and external stakeholders with projects/initiatives/deliverables.

Job Requirements:

  • HS Diploma, GED or Foreign Equivalent
  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred (business, sustainability, environmental sciences, engineering or equivalent)
  • Required, 3-5 years sustainability experience in a corporate or consulting environment.
  • Experience in carbon abatement and other variables of climate transition including waste, water, and circularity, as well as:
    • Energy efficiency, energy optimization, low carbon fuels/biofuels, hydrogen, CO2, and CCUs
    • Energy transition, decarbonization, renewables, carbon offsets, and carbon monetization.
    • Technical and operational feasibility and engineering studies
    • Evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions, propositions for reduction and abatement, and correlating economical, market, technical, operational, and other impacts
  • Highly motivated, ambitious, and a quick learner given this evolving field.
  • Experience leading and working collaboratively on teams to develop and deliver innovative solutions to complex problems.
