Position Overview:

Situation:

“Sustainability” had been a buzz word that has been around for several years. Recent global events have brought more real action plans & brand commitments to this topic. Plastics in the Oceans, microplastics in drinking water, 2025 goals for major brand owners and Climate Change all have impacted the need for more focus from Hammer Packaging. At the same time, pricing pressure continues to accelerate in our marketplace. These trends open the door for innovation through unique packaging products. They also point out the need for Hammer Packaging to reduce the material wastes in our operation.

Obstacles:

This is a brand-new position that will require excellent communication skills to be effective. From an outside view, we must remember that customers like the idea of sustainability but are not typically willing to pay for it.

Action:

Develop a deep understanding of all printing and finishing operations. Update our historical sustainability KPI’s and develop new KPI’s. Work with Marketing to communicate those KPI’s. Attend Continuous Improvement & Lean training. Become certified as a back-up to the Product Support Engineers. By end of Q1 2020, work with subject matter experts to reduce these packaging materials used to transport Hammer product by 15% and/or find sustainable alternatives. Orchestrate a Hammer “Adopt a Roadway” clean-up program for an area like Scottsville Rd for the Spring of 2020. Assist with PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) in early 2020. Plan for and lead SGP (Sustainable Green Printing Partnership) Certification in late 2020.
