HP Hood has grown into one of the country’s largest branded dairy operators with approximately 3,000 employees and 13 manufacturing plants throughout the United States. Hood has managed sustainability efforts on an ad hoc-committee basis for more than 15 years. As a supplier to major customers in the food & beverage space, Hood has submitted to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for the past 12 years. Hood’s growth and interests on sustainability and energy management has evolved to the point where the company has made a decision to establish a full time position dedicated to sustainability.

Job Summary:

Lead all aspects of Hood’s sustainability programs, which ranges from the research, development, and implementation of sustainability strategy and policies that improve the organization’s environmental impact without detracting from other business goals. Monitor & influence our supply chain partners’ practices (i.e., raw milk, ingredients and packaging suppliers), respond to sustainability data inquiries & surveys from our customers & industry partners and establish innovative solutions & sustainability metrics including Science Based Targets (SBTs) for our business and our brands. Work cross functionally to identify and launch projects that enhance economic, environmental and social value to Hood and its customers.

This role is for a career dedicated environmental sustainability professional with a passion for driving continuous improvement in process efficiency and effectiveness. This individual will serve as the sole leader and technical expert to meet all business and company sustainability objectives. The Sustainability Manager demonstrates exceptional technical / communication skills and has the ability to influence and advance sustainability efforts across all functions in the company. Must be experienced and capable of defining a business case for sustainability projects and initiatives.

Role advises owners and company executives on sustainability as appropriate. Must be a creative & innovative thinker that has the ability to develop or introduce creative ideas. Provides functional oversight to plant operations, plant engineers’, communications, sales & marketing staff and serves as sustainability mentor and guide to all Hood employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Make a company-wide impact by organizing Hood’s sustainability strategy and drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop this function from the ground up, lead implementation and execution of Hood’s sustainability efforts.
  • Work with executive leaders to establish sustainability architecture, governance, goals & maturity model.
  • Develop and implement sustainability policies, practices and associated standard operating procedures.
  • Lead implementation of program initiatives for carbon neutrality by 2050, water stewardship & energy conservation.
  • Gather, analyze and monitor sustainability data, provide trend reports and present recommendations.
  • Contribute to Hood’s reporting framework by using spreadsheets, dashboards and other reporting tools.
  • Prepare presentations for customer meetings and internal sales teams.
  • Responsible for contract relationship with vendor for energy management, tracking & metrics.
  • Lead quarterly Hood Green Team calls with Hood operations.
  • Serve as a leader and a guide mentoring Hood Green Team members at the site level.
  • Serve as the primary resource to enable sustainability improvement projects with Hood operations that have a direct impact on GHG reduction, energy efficiency and water conservation.
  • Work collaboratively with Hood contacts on sustainability metrics and initiatives.
  • Publish and update Hood’s website as it pertains to sustainability.
  • Serve as an author of internal success stories related to best practices in sustainability.
  • Participate on customer panels and industry groups like the Innovation Center for US Dairy.
  • Produce a monthly activity report that will be distributed to key internal customers and Hood management.
  • Partner with Hood’s procurement department staff to monitor supplier compliance with GHG Scope 3 needs.
  • Partner with Hood’s sales & marketing department staff to support our sustainability efforts with branded products.

Education and Experience:

  • Requires a minimum of a BA/BS degree in business, environmental science, engineering or related discipline plus 5-10 years of related experience. A master’s degree in a relevant discipline is a plus.
  • Must be familiar with current sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting systems (i.e. CDP, GRI, SMETA, etc.).
  • Experience in a manufacturing setting preferred, dairy food & beverage experience is a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

Must have a passion for sustainability; known as a collaborator, self-starter/self-driven individual; management level professional that has both analytical & quantitative skills. Must have proven success and experience in launching and managing environmental sustainability initiatives with proven outcomes.

Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Skype, Zoom (able to set up and facilitate live meetings). Expert presentation skills and facilitation skills with the ability to lead discussions on sustainability topics for a diverse range of internal and external audiences.

Must be able to work independently and build mutual trust, respect and cooperation among co-workers. Able to take initiative in performing job duties and seek opportunities for increased responsibilities. Able to be creative and demonstrate innovative methods to advance sustainability. Understanding of the food & beverage industry to develop and execute effective sustainability strategies at HP Hood.

Job Environment:

Must be able to sit, stand, climb and walk frequently, capable of lifting up to 20 pounds, work in both outdoor and indoor conditions including wet, hot or humid conditions as well as being able to tolerate refrigerated temperatures at 35°F or freezer temperatures at 20°F (with protective gear). Must be able to work around dairy food products, be able to visit farms and work in a manufacturing and warehouse environment.

Travel:

This is largely a remote assignment. Travel is estimated to be 25% (one week per month).
