Position Overview:

Job Summary

The Sustainability Manager will be a part of the Mountain View team and be responsible for implementation and tracking of the overlapping sustainable development goals.  The Sustainability Manager will execute day to day technical sustainability implementation within the assigned district for LEED Neighborhood and District Sustainability Plan.  This person should be an expert in embodied carbon across all building typologies. The role combines an expert level technical skillset with the ability to drive results to reduce total embodied carbon.

Essential Job Functions, Duties and Responsibilities 

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.  They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities and skills required of personnel so classified.

  • Execute daily management of SME consultants for District Sustainability Plan implementation.
  • Manage sustainability technical integration between infra, masterplan and asset disciplines and facilitate overall integrated design process.

The Sustainability Manager will be responsible for tracking that each district project team is on track to meeting the sustainability goals at key milestones related to:

  • Land use entitlement and permitting
  • RFP and procurement packages
  • Design milestones
  • Budgets and costing exercises
  • Third-party benchmarking milestones (LEED, etc)
  • Quarterly/monthly updates to Google and Lendlease executives
  • Tracking and implementation will require an organized understanding of which workstreams, and consultants will need to engage in each milestone.

Also responsible to:

  • Manage technical integration of environmental determinants of district health.
  • Manage climate related risk assessment activities in the district and resilience plan implementation.
  • Update all project documents including the Sustainability section of the Project Charter, Master Development Brief and Project Specific Briefs after confirmation of the District Sustainability Plan goals, targets, and outcomes with leadership.
  • Support the ongoing development of project delivery documentation related to District Sustainability Plan, including Low Embodied Carbon Guides and quality management approach.
  • Develop the Mountain View Sustainability Action Plan for implementation in Phase 1 and all following phases including entitlement related sustainability activities , design reviews, material selection, renewable energy strategies, for office, residential, and open space, construction waste strategies, operational recycling, flood mitigation, climate resilience, air quality analysis, LEED analysis.
  • Act as guardian of Google Objectives and LL Objectives such as Pathways to 24/7 carbon free energy and zero emissions.
  • Act as a SME and Sustainability Project Manager throughout ongoing masterplanning, infrastructure detailed design and commencement of asset development throughout construction of districts.
  • Coordinate with horizontal and vertical district teams for implementation of the Google District Sustainability Plan, LEED Neighborhood rating, green procurement strategies, and managing reporting to Google on performance expectations of the district.
  • Procure, mobilize, and manage SME consultants for all sustainability aspects in Mountain View under the supervision of the Lendlease Sustainability Director
  • Manage the review of sustainability deliverables.

General Background and Minimum Requirements

  • Masters degree qualification in Sustainability Management, Construction Management, Environmental Management, Engineering, Architecture or any other sustainability related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to form sound working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to work under limited direction and use initiative and judgement and flexibility and adaptability in order to work under pressure to balance urgency and importance
  • Entrepreneurial and commercial skills at a high level to define, champion and progress project sustainability objectives.
  • Sustainability project management skills to support the team in ensuring sustainability objectives are delivered on time and within budgets.
  • Leadership, problem solving, organizational planning skills.
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment; ability to work collaboratively without needing to control resources to deliver outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills, able to build trusting and respectful relationships with all levels of employees while driving results in their areas.

  • Technical:
    • Sound understanding of sustainability rating systems such as LEED Neighborhood and LEED BD &C, LEED ZERO, Envision, Green Roads, Sites, Living Building Challenge,
    • Understanding of all California related standards, codes, mandates such as California Title 24, California Zero Code.
    • Knowledge of carbon accounting and fluency in carbon scopes 1-3, knowledge of TCFD and climate related risk assessments.
    • Awareness of CoP, IPCC and other international sustainability topics particularly as related to Tech companies and internationally traded construction companies.
    • Sound understanding of circularity and zero waste strategies.
    • Sound understanding of net positive water concepts.
    • Strong communication skills to be able to deliver messaging of technical topics to non-SME colleagues.
    • Able to manage consultants to deliver excellent quality sustainability reports, credit templates, calculators, rating system support kits and sustainability code compliance documents as required by clients, the City entitlement commitments or by Sustainability Director
    • Ability to undertake and analyze strategic and targeted research
    • Able to conduct client facing meetings and facilitate the integrated design process
    • Ability to assist project teams manage costs for sustainability initiative implementation
    • Show a strong understanding of planning entitlement and authority approval processes and issues and demonstrate a proven ability to work with authorities to achieve project objectives
    • Sound understanding of sustainability as a brand value and also its role in place creation
    • Excellent ability to prepare RFPs and Project Specific Briefs for both technical and commercial components
    • High level knowledge of districts systems and how it enables sustainability.
