Position Overview:

At McKinstry, we’re proud to be a diverse and passionate group of innovators and problem-solvers, builders and engineers, mentors and students. We believe the world needs curious, forward-thinking, solutions-oriented people who want to make our planet better. We are committed to strengthening our diversity through recruiting, developing, and retaining professionals from all backgrounds, and we believe that promoting diversity, equity, and inclusivity is an integral component of our continuing quest To Build a Thriving Planet. If you are looking to leave a purposeful mark on the world, then McKinstry is the place for you.

Here’s where you come in:

We are currently seeking a Carbon & Climate Sustainability Program Manager to help McKinstry advance sustainability in our own operations and in the built environment. This position can sit anywhere in the US, with a strong preference in the Western states in which McKinstry operates.

In this role, you will be a critical partner in the execution of McKinstry’s 2025 strategy to meaningfully address the climate crisis – by decreasing McKinstry’s own operational emissions, advancing net zero solutions in the built environment with our clients, and contributing to sustainability initiatives in our local communities through community service and philanthropy.

This role will have a particular focus on McKinstry’s internal operational emissions – including our annual internal GHG inventory and report development, data collection and validation, development of recommended strategies to reduce emissions, alignment to CDP and The Climate Pledge, development of KPIs and science-based targets, carbon consulting, and other carbon accounting activities.

It’s vital the successful candidate collaborates with internal business partners to advance carbon reduction strategies across McKinstry, and lead teams of subject matter experts (SMEs) focused on identifying solutions and opportunities (e.g. relative to fleet, travel, facilities, etc.).

You will also partner with the social responsibility team to engage employees meaningfully in this work, integrate equity and environmental justice initiatives, and identify community engagement and climate resiliency opportunities that align with our goals and climate risk.

What we’d like to see from you:

  • Carbon management degree, qualification, and/or Master’s degree desirable.
  • Relevant industry training or certification desirable in construction, engineering, energy performance contracting, or high-performance design-build.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working on climate change issues, preferably within a consulting environment.
  • Proven technical expertise in GHG quantification and accounting across global sources including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.
  • Knowledge of industry reporting standards related to sustainability, such as CDP, GRI, RE100, and the GHG Protocol; other accounting standards also helpful.
  • Understanding of climate change regulations, policies, and actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct national, enterprise-level carbon accounting assessments.
  • Data management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated relationship-building and informal leadership skills; ability to inspire, motivate, and empower.
  • Ability to collaborate and navigate across a national, non-hierarchical organization.
  • Expertise with off-the-shelf analytical tools and software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerBI, Teams, Sharepoint, PowerPoint).
