Role Description

The Senior Manager, Sustainability and Mission will play a critical role in progressing Simple Mills’ mission to advance the holistic health of the planet and its people. The Senior Manager will be responsible for leading the sustainable packaging strategy, leading employee engagement programs related to human and planetary health, coordinating regenerative agriculture farmer engagement programs in key sourcing regions, supporting marketing and communications related to human and planetary health, and supporting additional projects to help advance our mission.

Reporting to the Director of Sustainability & Mission, key responsibilities will include:

Regenerative Agriculture Programs

  • Coordinate a subset of existing and emerging regenerative agriculture farmer engagement programs in key sourcing regions. Manage multi-year partnerships with on-the-ground experts and suppliers to equip farmers with resources that enable implementation of regenerative principles.
  • Partner with the Procurement team to identify and vet suppliers with a commitment to traceability and regenerative agriculture principles.

Sustainable Packaging Strategy

  • Develop and lead the company’s sustainable packaging strategy by collaborating cross-functionally to optimize packaging design, select sustainable source materials, and increase material recoverability at end of life.

Internal Engagement

  • Lead company-wide People & Planet quarterly learning modules by identifying timely topics, selecting external speakers, and coordinating in-person and virtual events.
  • Facilitate the cross-functional People & Planet Ambassadors group to serve as liaisons for their functions and advance company-wide human and planetary health initiatives.
  • Identify additional internal engagement opportunities related to our mission and partner with the People Operations team to coordinate activities.

Impact Reporting, Communications, and Marketing

  • Lead development of the annual sustainability report by partnering with Marketing, Procurement, and other functions to collect data, write, and design an engaging annual report.
  • Support communications related to our mission by preparing PowerPoint presentations, writing talking points for external presentations by the CEO and Director of Sustainability & Mission, and partnering with the Marketing team on PR initiatives, award submissions, press releases, social media posts, and other opportunities to externally showcase our leadership in human and planetary health.

Other

  • Support Simple Mills Climate Action Plan through data collection and target setting.
  • Support Innovation team to embed human and planetary health tenets into product design.
  • Support Sales team to share human and planetary health initiatives with retailers.

Perform other projects as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in sustainability, agriculture, packaging, or related field within the CPG industry
  • Bachelor’s degree required in a related field such as environmental science, agricultural science, agricultural policy, sustainability, or engineering.
  • Master’s degree in a related field strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of sustainability, supply chain logistics, agriculture, and packaging materials
  • Experience with sustainability and climate reporting standards, frameworks, and certifications, such as GRI, BCorp, and the Science Based Targets Initiative
  • Exceptional writing skills and ability to distill complex concepts into digestible language.
  • Strong research skills and ability to substantiate claims using scientific journal articles.
  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter mindset with the ability to navigate ambiguity and creatively problem solve.
  • Experience working directly with farmers or on farms preferred.
  • Ability to support cross-functional projects with varying levels of complexity.
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint proficiency
  • Passion around the power of food to impact human and planetary health outcomes.

Compensation will be competitive for the ideal candidate. The salary range expectation for this role is $110,000 – $130,000. This position will be in-office at our Mill Valley, CA location. Simple Mills follows CDC recommendations to help insure a safe working environment for all individuals in-office. Remote working may be considered as necessary from a designated location in the United States (the new hire’s permanent residence, as documented in our HR System, Rippling). Sufficient internet access to support video conferencing is required.
