Position Overview:
Primary Duties
The role of the Environmental & Sustainability Manager is to lead all environmental compliance and sustainability activities across the Takeda Massachusetts Bio Operations Site, including manufacturing operations in Lexington and Alewife (Cambridge), and warehouse/distribution in North Reading and Belmont. This role also supports EHS department functions within manufacturing, warehouses, laboratories and offices. This role will collaborate as part of the EHS Senior Management team reporting into the Site EHS Head.
Core responsibilities include: maintaining EHS permits and licenses, performing required inspections and investigations, analyzing data for reports and EHS software management; providing and developing training, driving environmental performance and supporting sustainability initiatives. A strong focus will be placed on program and process ownership as well as the ability to provide guidance and leadership to junior staff and business partners.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure environmental compliance by building systems and programs that supports of our established permits, latest regulations, best practices, and corporate standards.
- Interface with corporate EHS and site leadership teams to drive environmental compliance and performance.
- Work with and provide direction to other Takeda departments and continuously improve data integrity, and provide metrics for internal or corporate reporting.
- Manage direct reports, consultants and/or contractors for day to day operations.
- Manage and continuously improve environmental aspects for air emissions, hazardous waste, hazardous chemicals, discharges of treated waste water.
- Support EHS incidents and invetigations . Help establish and implement corrective actions and make recommendations for areas needing improvement. Track corrective actions to closure. Ability to lead complex investigations across the site.
- Develop and deliver EHS training to all personnel as required by regulations and by Takeda standards and procedures.
- Lead and assist with internal audit inspections related to the EHS program requirements for Takeda.
- Gather and manage data related to the EHS programs working with other Takeda departments, consultants, and contractors; assemble, analyze and deliver the data for reports to State or Federal agencies.
Education and Experience Requirements
Essential: A minimum of 7-12 years’ experience in the EHS field; BS/BA required in technical discipline: Engineering, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental studies, life science or similar field.
Desired: Professional certification and/or Master’s Degree in related field. Experience in biological or pharmaceutical manufacturing/laboratories or other highly regulated industry strongly desired. Experience with management systems and ISO 14001 preferred. Previous direct reports or direct oversight of personnel desired.

- Experienced with ISO 14001 management system.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to be resourceful and proactive to identify potential areas of non-compliance with business or facility changes and set expectations to achieve a future state of compliance.
- Knowledgeable in local, state, and federal regulatory requirements as well as proposed regulatory or legislative changes at all levels.
- Familiar with management expectations regarding direct reports.
- Ability to work with all programs in Microsoft Office and software systems for EHS reporting

Other Job Requirements
- Position is located in Lexington, MA
- Ability to operate a car (valid driver’s license) and travel via air, rail or other means of passenger conveyance.
- Limited travel to satellite locations required (Belmont, N. Reading, and Cambridge)
- Continuous professional development by attending EHS professional organization meetings whether local or out of state
- Candidate must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning and wear of protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. No make-up, jewelry, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in manufacturing work environments.
- Work may be required outside of the standard 8-hour workday including weekends.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 25 lbs. and remain standing or walking for extended periods In the performance of site inspection and compliance activities
- In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing conditions.
