TJX has long been committed to pursuing initiatives that are environmentally responsible and smart for our business. As a large, complex international business, we work to continually make progress on our environmental sustainability efforts and help mitigate our impact on the environment. As we source merchandise, product packaging, and supplies for our own operations, we may find more opportunities to procure materials with sustainable attributes. As some of our first steps along this journey, we aim to shift 100% of the packaging for products developed in-house by our product design team to be reusable, recyclable, or contain sustainable materials by 2030.
In order to support these critical goals we have a newly created role for an Environmental Sustainability Manager, Product and Packaging.
This highly visible role will support TJX’s Environmental Sustainability program, with a focus on sustainable materials sourcing. This will include supporting the implementation of TJX’s approach to finding opportunities to source more sustainable products and packaging, including those that include certain raw materials that have undergone third party certification. Additionally, this role will support the roadmap for TJX’s sustainable packaging goal.
Areas of Responsibility:
Product and Packaging Sustainability Strategy Development
- Partner with key internal stakeholders to drive the implementation of TJX’s product and materials sustainability initiatives, including the development of processes, training tools, tracking mechanisms
- Define KPIs/targets and measure impact of sustainable product programs that can be used in public reporting of progress against the Materials Sourcing key program priority
- Collaborate with key internal partners to validate and substantiate on-product environmental benefit marketing claims
- Keep a pulse on industry trends, constantly seeking out best practices and benchmark against peers as well as industry associations such as (AAFA, SAC, NRF, Textile Exchange, Sustainable Brands, Sustainable Packaging Coalition etc.)
- Conduct ongoing research and data analysis to support and expand TJX’s sustainable materials sourcing strategy
- Review and assess the potential of using new sustainable materials and certification schemes
Process
- Set and/or refine internal standards and processes for sourcing sustainable products using external standards and certifications (e.g. GRS, GOTS, OCS, FSC) and reinforce process and policies with key stakeholders in the organization
- Help lead and develop robust systems and software to track all sustainable products from design to sales performance and manage vendor certification documents and data
- Create and manage a documentation repository
- Provide subject matter expertise and content for training materials to educate internal teams around sustainability claims verification, marketing, best practices, insights and peer benchmarking findings
- Provide subject matter expertise on processes and requirements of TJX approved eligible certifications (e.g. Textile exchange standards, GOTs, FSC, OEKO Tex)
Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with key internal partners and external stakeholders, including industry and subject matter specific organizations
- Review, analyze and provide strategic recommendations related to improving adoption of environmentally preferred materials
- Evaluate new standards, certification schemes and material types for adoption
- Manage relationship with standard setting bodies and organizations
Program Support
- Support Executive Environmental Steering Committee (EESC) annual meeting
- Support Global Communications team with external reporting such as Corporate Responsibility report and website content updates
- Participate on cross functional teams for new program rollout and existing program enhancement as needed
Experience, Skills & Knowledge:
- 5+ years experience in sustainability field. Apparel industry, product development, raw material, supply chain or product sustainability experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability managing product environmental or corporate responsibility-related programs for sustainable products
- Knowledge of and experience working with product sustainability standards and certifications including GOTS, Oeko-Tex, GRS, OCS and FSC.
- Advanced MS Excel skills that can be used to combine and analyze data from various sources, and generate reports and graphics to help drive decision-making
- Previous engagement with the Textile Exchange, BCI, SAC, or comparable industry working groups
- Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative and team-oriented environment
- Strong problem-solving abilities with a solutions-oriented mindset
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Proven ability to work creatively and analytically to deliver results
- Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent ideally with focus on sustainability; graduate degree preferred
