Position Overview:
Corporate and Government Affairs
The Corporate and Government Affairs team works closely with the U.S. government, as well as coordinating grassroots advocacy efforts, to represent United on public policy and legislative issues.
Job overview and responsibilities
The Manager of Environmental Sustainability will be responsible for supporting United’s decarbonization teams in meeting the company’s climate target of net zero by 2050 without relying on carbon offsets. The Manager will support United’s decarbonization technology investment portfolio and perform technical and environmental diligence as required for potential investments. The Manager is responsible for the implementation of climate policy (particularly the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation or CORSIA), overseeing monitoring/reporting as well as tracking carbon markets to manage compliance obligations. Manager will support United’s climate disclosures and ESG portfolio, overseeing implementation of new climate disclosure frameworks. Support other duties as assigned.
- Establish and maintain strong business relationships with key United operational business units (including but not limited to analytics teams, network planning, and fuels procurement teams) to maintain emissions forecast and track emissions intensity metrics
- Responsible for creating additional key performance metrics, evaluating progress toward climate goals and communicating impacts of analyses and KPIs to stakeholders, both in and outside of Environmental Affairs
- Support management in technical and environmental diligence reviews, providing analysis where needed in determining potential environmental benefit of potential investments
- Accountable for continued monitoring and implementation of United’s CORSIA program including, but not limited to, the monitoring carbon markets and prices, implementing CORSIA compliance plan and publicly representing United in policy forums
- Support United’s enterprise-wide ESG program by maintaining climate-related risk evaluation and disclosures in alignment with implemented and managed KPIs and metrics
- Use technical knowledge and experience to provide thoughtful decision-making and guidance in strategic implementation of United’s climate strategy and program
- Be solution-oriented and committed to creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation
- Model integrity, possess self-awareness and foster an environment of accountability
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/engineering/policy or similar or comparable environmental sustainability work experience with general understanding of climate policy
- Minimum 5 years of environmental sustainability experience in corporate sustainability reporting, ESG, climate policy, clean technologies and/or alternative fuels
- Knowledge in climate reporting best practices
- General understanding of climate policies and carbon pricing vernacular
- General understanding of clean technologies and alternative energy buckets
- Strong verbal, written and presentation communication skills
- Solid analytical capabilities to support diligence and compliance activities
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal, management presence and judgment skills to employ thought leadership across a group of stakeholders
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- This position offers a hybrid work model with in-office and remote work and we are open to candidates living in Chicago or Washington D.C.
Preferred
- Masters in environmental science/engineering/policy or something similar
- 3-5 years project management or environmental consulting experience with experience managing project teams
- Experience in implementation of sustainability programs
- Knowledge of GHG Protocol or other climate reporting frameworks
- Knowledge of specific domestic carbon policies and/or carbon policies relating to the aviation industry
- Experience collaborating among teams and working in projects involving multiple groups and individuals of differing backgrounds and perspectives
