SUSTAINABILITY & OPERATIONS MANAGER
Operations
Classification: Level 3 / Class Code 2250 / Full-Time / Exempt / Benefited
Hiring Salary Range: $65,000 – $85,000
THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Operations Department includes oversight and responsibility for Facilities, Special Events & Guest Services, Construction & Campus Planning, Space Allocation, Sustainability, as well as Safety & Emergency Preparedness functions at the College. The College is in the midst of an exciting transition wherein we are updating the majority of our campus plant, seeking to bring our Academic Village shared campus platform to fruition, and working towards a stretch goal of becoming the greenest urban campus by 2025. With that challenging context in mind, the Chief Operating Officer (“COO”) is seeking an Sustainability & Operations Manager who is adaptable, agile, and knowledgeable. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in sustainability and operations, with key areas of emphasis in project management; budgeting, contracting, and procurement; land use planning; and community relations, ideally in more than one substantive area and with a specific emphasis or interest in higher education.
The Sustainability and Operations Manager serves under the general supervision of the COO. Typical duties of the Sustainability and Operations Manager consist of, but are not limited to, the following:
Sustainability Initiatives
- Oversees sustainability campus enhancement projects;
- Creates, implements, and maintains UC Hastings Law’s sustainability plans, policies, and protocols;
- Coordinates with constituents across the College to facilitate sustainability initiatives in support of the College’s goal of becoming “the greenest urban campus by 2025”;
- Coordinates campus programming and activities related to sustainability including representing UC Hastings Law at events;
- Procures and produces sustainability-related signage and other informational material for the Hastings community;
- Builds, manages, and updates the College’s external and internal sustainability websites;
- Responsible for LEED certification of new campus construction on behalf of UC Hastings Law;
- Conducts research and collects data to present in written reports and in response to inquiries and surveys from external organizations along with submitting information to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) via the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS);
- and, oversees the Sustainability fellowship program.
General Operations Department Management
- Provides high level project management expertise, as needed, to all functions and departments within the Operations department;
- Supports land use planning projects pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act including an Environmental Impact Report;
- Serves as key liaison within and on behalf of the Operations Department in order to streamline collaborative projects and programs as well as to ensure exceptional campus-wide customer service and project/program facilitation;
- Supports space planning initiatives and stakeholder engagement including relocation of multiple departments through several phases of new campus construction;
- Serves as representative and focal point for disseminating information about Operations Department projects, programs, resources, and functions to students, faculty, staff, alumni and external constituencies;
- Responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining departmental publications, marketing materials, presentations, websites as well as establishing a social media presence with a keen attention to detail and aesthetics;
- In collaboration with the COO, prepares initial Operations departmental budgets for review, approval, and submittal by COO, as well as providing oversight of budget to ensure conformance with the same. Works in close coordination with the Fiscal Services and Purchasing departments on ensuring compliance with all fiscal and purchasing policies and requirements;
- Oversees strategic creation of a functional and accessible filing system for voluminous amounts of plans, documents, and permits related to past, present, and future campus construction and other programmatic efforts;
- Manages competitive solicitation process including Request for Proposal and Request for Bid Processes and coordinates with outside contractors, vendors, and consultants to ensure services meet College needs;
- Drafts policies, plans, and comprehensive reports;
- Researches, identifies, drafts, writes, conducts market research, and oversees grant-writing and other funding opportunities to support the expansion of campus sustainability, academic village/campus housing, and other College efforts;
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Undergraduate degree with emphasis in sustainability, policy, or environmental arena required and graduate degree preferred;
- US Green Building Council LEED Accredited Professional or Green Associate Certification preferred;
- Project and program management experience with evidence of bringing sustainability or environmental projects and programs to successful conclusion required;
- Three to five years of office experience preferred;
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Must have outstanding customer service skills including exceptional communication skills in all mediums;
- Must have proven ability to work independently, pursuant to direction from multiple parties, while experiencing frequent interruptions;
- Must be energetic, articulate, and detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills;
- Must thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment;
- Must be enthusiastic about working with a diverse population.
- Must have strong multi-tasking skills and ability to meet constantly changing priorities and regular deadlines;
- Must have sophisticated computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite, basic video editing, HTML, graphic design, and social networking skills;
- Must have strong research and data collection skills;
- Must be adept at creating marketing materials and content;
- Must be able to independently analyze and respond to inquiries;
- Must desire mentorship and have a growth- and learning-mindset;
- Experience with sustainability, land use planning/entitlements, environmental compliance, and/or higher education preferred.
