Position Overview:

Job Summary

The Sustainability Coordinator applies professional concepts and skills to support the planning, coordination and implementation of sustainability efforts for the University.

Involves working with students, faculty, and staff, and students to develop, coordinate, and promote effective sustainability initiatives related to the University’s academic, operational and outreach functions. Develops and/or implements a sustainability strategy and performance metrics for a department, campus or hospital by integrating sustainability into long-range planning and ongoing operations. Enables University stakeholders to improve sustainability outcomes; coordinating and project managing programming and activities related to sustainability and undertaking research on sustainability-related topics. Facilitates cross department collaboration across operational, academic, and clinical departments. Coordinates and tracks operational programs including energy, food service, waste management, recycling, resource efficiency, greenhouse gas reporting/reductions, transportation, supply chain, facilities, biodiversity and design for environment. Promotes connections and synergies between environmental protection, economic stability, and social equity in the University’s activities. Incumbent may chair or co-chair one or more work groups such as green labs/sustainable operations, health, green buildings, or any of the existing work groups

Department Description

Climate change is one of the most challenging and wide-ranging issues confronting humankind today. Its effects on the environment and human health have been soundly acknowledged by the scientific and academic communities. Chancellor Sam Hawgood charged the UCSF Advisory Committee on Sustainability (UACS) and its supporting committees to:
• Examine UCSF’s effect on the environment from a comprehensive perspective;
• Evaluate existing UCSF policies, procedures and/or programs that affect the environment;
• Serve as a coordinating body for groups or individuals concerned with sustainability issues at UCSF; and
• Recommend changes that will increase sustainability at UCSF.

The Sustainability Steering Committee develops strategy (to meet UC Sustainable Practices Policies) and presents to the UACS for approval and is then implemented by the Sustainability Steering Committee’s 9 workgroups in the areas of energy/climate, water, waste, food, green bldg, green labs, procurement, and communications.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, management, or policy; architecture; engineering; public health, or related degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training
• Demonstrated knowledge in the area of environmental sustainability and policy
• Knowledge of sustainability concepts and practices, such as LEED systems, climate action plans, food service procurement, and waste management practices
• Skill in planning and implementing sustainability focused practices
• Requires general knowledge in data collection and analysis techniques; statistics or social science research techniques; knowledge of common organization-specific computer application programs; knowledge of organizational principles and procedures involved in handling sensitive data
• Proficient in most software applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Access) and database applications
• Data management skills
• Social media and website management skills
• Ability to draft clear, concise correspondence, develop presentations and business documents
• Ability to organize information, extract relevant data, and prepare reports in various formats
• Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to present information in a clear concise manner verbally and in writing
• Ability to build collaborative relationships and business partnerships
• Thorough active listening, critical thinking, good interpersonal skills and ability to multi-task
• Able to provide good judgment, decision-making, and problem solving

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Green MBA or similar
• Certified Sustainability Professional (ISSP)
• CA Driver’s license
• Laboratory and/or Healthcare experience
• Understanding of organizational rules and regulations
• Knowledge of U.S. Green Building Council rating systems
