Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Chief Sustainability Officer, this position supports UTA’s sustainability programs. The Sustainability Coordinator will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student organizations to encourage and promote sustainable practices on campus. This position should work to build a culture of sustainability that promotes best practices through a variety of activities, including green office programs, recycling, education for sustainable development, newsletters, and various outreach activities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, plan, coordinate, manage, and implement programs and activities related to campus sustainability. Both the manner in which these activities are organized, and the nature of their content should be geared towards achieving cultural change through collaboration, role-modeling, and sustainability education among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintain and gather data on various programs and initiative like the AASHE STARS report, SIMAP for emissions inventory, sustainability Dashboard, and other rankings and reports.
  • Assist campus leadership in defining goals and formulating new sustainability plans for the campuses.
  • Provide regular updates to the campus community and leadership on program effectiveness, trends, and recommended changes needed to improve sustainability programming and effectiveness.
  • Manage and improve the Waste Management Program (recycling, composting, electronic waste) and explore ways to implement new programs to improve UTA’s diversion rate.
  • Represent the sustainability program to the campuses and local/regional/national audiences. Maintain relationships with, create resources for and act as a role model for groups, programs, offices, and departments at UTA and beyond to achieve campus sustainability objectives.
  • Partner with the office of marketing and communication to coordinate and/or participate in public relations activities including website updates, brochures, newsletters, and other materials to support the work of the campus.
  • Advise, engage, and support a diverse group of students and volunteers from various student organizations and student governance and manage 1-2 student workers at the Office.
  • Engage the campus community through outreach and educations programs such as Office Green Teams.
  • Support UTA’s sustainability commitments by conducting research, tracking performance, preparing and submitting reports to AASHE.
  • Maintain budgets, equipment, and records necessary to ensure ongoing support for sustainability.
  • Research and maintain working knowledge of best practices at peer institutions with regards to sustainability.
  • Participate in conferences and related events to identify new ideas and practices as well as to communicate UTA’s sustainability efforts.
  • Seek out grant funding for sustainability-related projects and work to apply for those grants and award applications
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work of the office.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with three (3) years or relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience in sustainability and/or environmental science.
  • Demonstrated experience in sustainability program management.
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for current sustainability issues and best practices.
  • Ability to share knowledge with diverse groups.
  • Ability to continually learn about or acquire new knowledge of sustainability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously without daily supervision, delegating tasks appropriately as needed.
  • Ability to build and maintain strategic working relationships with a diverse range of individuals, groups, and organizational leaders.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage data collection and reporting processes for surveys, reports, and publications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability or experience to recruit, work with, mentor, and/or supervise college-aged student workers, interns, and volunteers.
  • Advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Interest in and academic background in sustainability.
