Position Overview:
JOB DETAILS:
Seeking a Sustainability Manager that is committed to promoting a culture of environmental sustainability among the university community by managing sustainability priorities, engaging students and staff in sustainability initiatives and promoting the university’s positive environmental record. The manager will identify, recommend, and monitor progress towards the Campus Sustainability Action Plan and university sustainability priorities. The manager will work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment on campus and the broader community. The manager serves as the liaison between the university and local, state, regional and national climate action organizations. The manager serves as the chair of the Sustainability Steering Committee and reports to the Vice Chancellor for Business, Financial, & Administrative Services. The anticipated start date of this position is mid-January 2022.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum/Required
- Bachelor’s degree in a sustainability field or related field
- Highly effective leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal relationship skills; ability to work successfully with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and manage projects and programs
- Experience with gathering and analyzing technical and financial data such as carbon emissions data, energy costs, etc.; ability to use data to drive decisions and recommendations
- Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects of varying size and complexity effectively and with attention to detail
- Experience translating complex technical information and data into accessible reports, plans, and presentations
- Excellent oral communication, written communication, and presentation skills
Highly Desired
- Master’s degree in a sustainability field or related field
- Demonstrated ability to manage social media platforms and campaigns; website management
- Experience with implementing sustainability programs in higher education
- Experience in managing student employees
- Experience with SIMAP and Second Nature greenhouse gas reporting platforms or similar emissions reporting tools
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implementation and Management of Sustainability Priorities
- Provide leadership for the Campus Sustainability Action Plan, strategic plan, and the Business, Finance and Administrative
- Services division focused initiatives.
- Identify and recommend sustainability priorities for the university to achieve the Second Nature Carbon Commitment carbon neutrality goals.
- Develop, manage and promote the university’s sustainability programs, priorities and accomplishments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building, waste reduction, sustainable transportation, and UW-Sprout Campus Garden.
- Coordinate or provide information for required sustainability reports to external agencies such as reports to Second Nature and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
- Serve as a resource and catalyst for enhancing sustainability initiatives with various departments, including Facilities Management, University Housing, Student Centers, Dining Services, and more.
- Develop and implement procedures to advance sustainability practices across campus.
- Committee Participation
- Facilitate the Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC) in driving sustainability strategy for the campus.
- Recommend annual charges for the SSC to UW-Stout’s Strategic Planning Group and the Vice Chancellor for Business, Financial, & Administrative Services.
- Provide bi-annual progress reports to the Strategic Planning Group and the Vice Chancellor for Business, Financial, & Administrative Services.
- Chair or participate in sustainability-related committees such as Campus-Wide Energy Committee, Waste Reduction Workgroup, Transportation Committee, Sustainable Construction & Renovation Committee, Campus Exteriors Development Committee.
- Advise the Stout Student Association’s Sustainability Council and assist with project coordination for Green Fee funded projects.
- Manage Departmental Operations
- Hire, train, and supervise departmental student staff.
- Manage the Sustainability Office’s budget, as well as the budgets for sustainability programs such as UW-Sprout Campus Garden, Alternative Transportation segregated fee, and Green Fee.
- Marketing & Events Coordination
- Develop and maintain all Sustainability Office’s web pages.
- Communicate and promote sustainability initiatives and accomplishments through the website, social media channels, campus emails, and more.
- Collaborate with MarCom and Student Life & Services Communications Committee to promote UW-Stout’s sustainability programs and goals.
- Oversee Campus Race to Zero Waste competition including data reporting, marketing, and education to the campus.
- Collaborate with the SSA Sustainability Council and other departments and organizations to host events for Earth Week, Campus Sustainability Month, and more.
- Assessment & Greenhouse Gas Inventory Management
- Complete an annual greenhouse gas inventory assessing the campus’ emissions and report all data to Second Nature’s Reporting Platform.
- Track sustainability metrics and KPIs for energy, waste, transportation and travel, landscapes, water, purchasing, refrigerants, and more.
- Liaison with Governmental Agencies and Community Organizations
- Serve as a liaison to develop and build upon relationships with the City of Menomonie, Dunn County, local community organizations, and UW System institutions.
- Communicate and present the university’s sustainability initiatives at government and community organization meetings.
- Assist community groups with sustainability-focused projects.
- Manage Transportation Programs
- Collaborate with the Transportation Committee to develop and enhance sustainable transportation options for students and employees.
- Assist the Stout Student Association in the management, promotion, and assessment of local bus services, including collaboration with Dunn County Transit.
- Develop, manage/assist with, and promote bike programs and bike infrastructure including bike locker rentals, bike racks and shelters, bike repair stations, Bike Friendly University designation, and StoutBikes bike rental program
- Oversee UW-Stout Rideshare website.
