Position Overview:

The Sustainability Manager leads the environmental sustainability efforts for Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood resorts’ operations. This position will work with the Western Region Sr. Environmental Sustainability Manager, the Sustainability team, local leadership, and employees across business units to proactively identify, develop and implement sustainability projects and programs. These programs will support our bold sustainability goal, Commitment to Zero, for a zero net operating footprint across the Vail Resort’s enterprise by 2030. The work will include energy and emissions, zero waste, forests and habitat, and more. This role will focus on integrating operations and employees with our sustainability goals, through program development, oversight, and implementation. The Tahoe Sustainability Manager is expected to represent the Tahoe resorts in sustainability matters within the local communities, and work closely with the resorts’ external partners and service providers as well as public agencies. The position is based at Heavenly Resort.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Proactively initiate, oversee and implement our Commitment to Zero vision and environmental sustainability programs to achieve a zero net operating footprint.
  • Be a sustainability leader that drives innovative programs in the areas of energy and emissions, waste, supply chain management, and other relevant areas to inspire our employees and our guests.
  • Significant focus will be placed on achieving Vail Resorts’ Zero Waste to Landfill by 2030 goal.
  • Support the identification and implementation of energy efficiency projects at the resort level, along with renewable energy opportunities with local utilities and community partners.
  • Project management: Effectively lead complex capital and budgetary projects that may involve multiple departments, time constraints, and external partners that further our sustainability goals.
  • Engagement and outreach: Effectively communicate environmental sustainability through various channels that will demonstrate leadership and drive guest and employee loyalty to our programs and resorts.
  • Supports brand, positioning, and outreach of sustainability initiatives to guests, employees, and communities in alignment with EpicPromise.
  • Teamwork & Leadership: Be a strong contributor and leader within the greater Vail Resorts Sustainability Team.
  • The Tahoe Sustainability Manager will be based out of the Heavenly resort.
  • Frequent travel, possibly exceeding 60% of total hours worked, will be required to the Kirkwood and Northstar resorts.
  • Occasional travel will be required to the Corporate Headquarters in Colorado and to offsite events at various locations.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Ability to facilitate strategic dialogue and problem solving across multiple departments.
  • Proven ability of being Out-Front and proactively identifying programs and projects to meet various goals.
  • Knowledge of energy and waste systems.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and building new relationships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised.
  • Strong computer skills in Excel required.
  • Proficient skier/snowboarder for travel within resort in winter season.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • 4+ years of experience preferably in sustainability including energy and waste reduction.
  • Mountain resort or hospitality experience preferred.
  • Experience with waste diversion and waste reduction strategies.
  • Experience with energy management and efficiency strategies.
