Position Overview:

The Manager, Corporate ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and Sustainability position will collaborate with the VP, Corporate ESG and Sustainability on all corporate strategy, initiatives, projects, and reporting related to sustainability and corporate ESG. The title will be commensurate with the skills, capabilities and experience of the successful candidate.

The position will report to and work closely with the VP, Corporate ESG and Sustainability, and will engage with our portfolio operating partners, sustainability service providers and internal corporate functions, including Marketing & Communications, Human Resources, Legal, Investor Relations, Investments, and Procurement. The position will also participate in the Ventas ESG Steering Committee.

Responsibilities

Portfolio Sustainability and Resilience

  • Identify and implement financially accretive investments in energy, water and waste efficiency projects throughout the Ventas portfolio:
    • Work with vendors and operating partners to identify and evaluate portfolio opportunities
    • Analyze and evaluate proposals, including confirmation of project costs and savings, underwriting of vendor qualifications, and other relevant diligence related to accounting, tax, legal, asset management, etc.
    • Prepare internal investment approval presentations
    • Manage vendor contract negotiations and set-up process
    • Oversee project implementation; Track progress to ensure timely and successful implementation
    • Track project results
  • Monitor the latest technologies and performance management best practices related to energy, water and waste efficiency, and health and wellness; Identify opportunities to implement in the Ventas portfolio
  • Evaluate and disseminate best practices regarding energy, water and waste efficiency among Ventas operating and development partners, in collaboration with Asset Management and Construction & Development teams
  • Develop and implement plan to achieve Ventas long-term environmental reduction goals
    • Track progress on an ongoing basis
    • Monitor energy, emissions and water intensity for the Ventas portfolio (by asset, operator, business model, property type, etc.)
  • Collaborate with operating partners and service providers to obtain green and health & wellness building certifications, including LEED, ENERGY STAR, IREM CSP, Fitwel, etc.
  • Develop and implement strategies to monitor portfolio climate risk exposure and improve portfolio resilience in collaboration with Risk Management, Construction & Development, Asset Management and Investments teams

ESG Reporting and Environmental Data Management

  • Manage reporting process for ESG surveys and frameworks, including, but not limited to GRESB, SAM CSA, and CDP:
    • Develop project plan for survey submission
    • Collaborate with relevant Ventas departments to collect data and complete responses
    • Oversee third-party environmental data aggregator to collect, review, analyze and compile environmental data and related information for survey submissions
    • Identify and prioritize opportunities for survey improvement; develop plan to implement improvement actions
  • Participate in the development of the annual Ventas Corporate Sustainability Report, with a particular focus on environmental content and data

ESG Strategy and Marketing

  • Work with ESG team to develop and implement ESG strategy and goals
  • Track and monitor corporate ESG goals in collaboration with relevant Ventas departments
  • Develop sustainability and corporate ESG content for Ventas website and Investor Relations materials in collaboration with Communications and Investor Relations
  • Develop and maintain Ventas environmental management policies
  • Monitor applicable climate and sustainability-related regulations; Assess potential impacts and work with Asset Management, Investments and operating partners to ensure compliance
  • Prepare materials for and participate in quarterly and ad hoc meetings with the ESG Steering Committee
  • Participate in ESG conferences, webinars, industry meetings and training sessions

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in financial analysis, corporate ESG/sustainability, real estate asset management, corporate finance, or management consulting
  • 4-year undergraduate degree; advanced degree a plus
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Awareness of and/or experience with implementation of sustainability and/or ESG initiatives is desired
  • Familiarity with operations of real estate asset classes is desired
  • Excellent quantitative, written and oral communication skills
  • Exhibits a high level of responsiveness, sense of urgency and the ability and desire to produce high-quality work product
  • Bias for action; strong initiative and results-oriented
  • Intellectually curious – a quick learner who combines previous professional and personal experiences to offer new ideas and solutions
  • Willingness to travel (~25%)
