Position Overview:
Job Description
The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for planning and managing the collection of data and information for entry into the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) online Reporting Tool. Maintains a STARS Scorecard for tracking the status of the more than 60 STARS evaluated topical areas (called credits). Responsible for gathering appropriate documentation that measures progress in achieving the goals outlined in the 15 points of the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment. Participates in the development of the university’s Sustainability Annual Report that is presented for approval to the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. Participates in the education, training, and professional development components of our robust Student Sustainability Internship Program and serves as our principal liaison with student sustainability groups. Assists in the planning, coordination and implementation of major sustainability outreach events and activities to include Sustainability Week in the fall, Green Office Certification, and Earth Week in the spring. Responsible for developing and maintaining the Office of Sustainability Website and social media, drafts sustainability articles for the Virginia Tech News, the Virginia Tech Student Weekly and other university publications.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, urban or environmental planning, environmental science, environmental engineering, or a related field or equivalent training and/or experience.
• Demonstrated leadership and managerial talent with ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects.
• Exceptional communications skills, interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and the ability to interact and build trusted relations with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Experience working with undergraduate students in a team building setting to advance collective goals.
• Fast learner, result driven, accepts and acts on all forms of feedback to effect change.
• Demonstrated high proficiency with current office software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, database management systems, electronic mail and presentation applications.
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience working on sustainability initiatives in a Higher Education environment.
• Familiarity with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS).
• Previous experience in/with communications, marketing, and public relations.
