Position Overview:

Weber strives to advance environmental and social responsibility through our packaging, products, operations and people. The Research & Development team is hiring a Sustainability Manager to build and support its Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) strategic goals.

This new position will be responsible for creating and integrating Weber’s ESG sustainability strategy and corporate plan with concentration on packaging materials. Individual will lead prioritization of key packaging sustainability initiatives and will be responsible for developing and tracking success milestones/metrics for new and existing grill/accessory products globally (e.g., EPS reduction / replacement, corrugate reduction, eco-friendly materials, shipping damage reduction).  The Sustainability Lead will partner cross-functionally to ensure seamless execution of sustainable materials and designs. Responsible for discovery of new global technologies and material sources in order to define an innovative pipeline of packaging that will help achieve ESG goals. This role will report into the Director of Packaging Experience, R&D

  • Direct accountability for creation and implementation of short and long term sustainability strategy along with development of key priorities and metrics for packaging materials.
  • Lead sustainability innovation and transparency of environmental impacts through development and application of life cycle analysis.
  • Create models that allow understanding, evaluation and optimization of environmental impacts across all stages of packaging material life cycle.
  • Calculate environmental impacts at the package, product category, and enterprise level across material impact categories.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain tools/methods to improve data availability and detail to meet business needs. Integrate into NPD processes.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with key suppliers to understand environmental impacts of current and new sustainable materials.
  • Ensure compliance of LCA methodology with ISO 14044 and other relevant standards.
  • Keeps up with industry trends, advancements and new technologies in sustainable packaging/product design.
  • Will act as key member of Weber’s ESG Council and will support global R&D Strat Plan around sustainability, related to packaging materials, recycling/reuse.
  • Responsible for creating and managing annual budget for sustainability research, testing and development.
  • Serve as global packaging ‘subject matter expert’ providing technical expertise to all regions.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Packaging Engineering or equivalent required
  • 8+ years work in Packaging Engineering with experience in sustainability related areas; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position
  • At least 2 years of experience in sustainability strategy development, implementation and performance reporting

Preferred:

  • Experience in scouting, developing, testing, implementing sustainable packaging solutions
  • Understanding of recycling technologies and how sustainable materials fit within existing and future streams
  • Strong knowledge of packaging material science specific to fiber (corrugate, hexacomb) and foam (EPS, EPE) based substrates
  • Knowledge and expertise with a wide range of packaging systems and materials used in the creation of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging
  • Awareness of sustainability best practices , including knowledge of regulations, laws, and guidelines
