Job Summary

The position is to enhance and lead EIG’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives across multiple product platforms, operational teams, and international jurisdictions. Reporting to the CEO, the position involves extensive interactions across all of EIG’s investment and operations teams as well as numerous external stakeholders including potential and existing investors, portfolio companies, and vendors.

Essential Job Functions

EIG Leadership

  • Chair ESG Committee, including organizing the agenda for Committee meetings
  • Support regional EIG offices to assess and benchmark extent of ESG integration and regulatory standards
  • Work closely with investment professionals and other colleagues to facilitate improved understanding and integration of ESG factors into investment decisions and throughout the investment lifecycle, covering both risks and opportunities

Investments

  • Support the investment platform on developing ESG policy for new investments
  • Develop ESG framework and tools to support the investment team in making informed integrated assessment of both fundamental/financial and ESG risk
  • Develop ESG risk model to support investment team with ongoing ESG monitoring and engagement with existing investments
  • Propose performance evaluation criteria to support the investment team in assessing the positive financial impact of ESG initiatives in portfolio companies
  • Work with portfolio company management to establish and implement ESG best practices
  • Work with banks and investors to develop ESG risk appraisal tools and appropriate monitoring and reporting frameworks for investments
  • Remain up to date on ESG trends and developments and translate them into actionable improvements in EIG’s capital development and investment activities and oversight of portfolio companies

ESG Metrics & Reporting

  • Improve ESG policies, data collection and reporting at both fund and portfolio company levels
  • Deliver annual impact reports
  • Support external communication to investors and stakeholders on material developments in EIG’s ESG performance and credentials
  • Evaluate and create informative, impactful ESG metrics
  • Maintain an understanding of international best practices on ESG management to ensure that EIG’s ESG policies and procedures remain best-in-class

Requirements

Essential:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an ESG leadership role applying internationally recognized ESG standards, ideally to International Finance Corporate (IFC) Performance Standards
  • Experience in private equity, alternative investments, and/or investment banking
  • Knowledgeable of socially responsible or impact investing within global capital markets
  • Experience measuring and reporting on ESG impacts of projects
  • Knowledgeable in global standards related to socially responsible/ESG investing and reporting including but not limited to ICMA Green and Social Bond Principles, UN Sustainable Development Goals, UN Principles for Responsible Investing, Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, UNEP Finance Initiative, Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, and Global Reporting Initiative
  • Solid understanding of how ESG concerns relate to material business risks and opportunities
  • General knowledge of finance sector levers for change as they relate to sustainability
  • Experience in building relationships across business units and corporate functions to influence process or policy changes. Understands business drivers and operational processes
  • Demonstrated excellent people skills, including the ability to motivate, inspire and lead, and work together at a high level with senior management and staff at all levels
  • Availability and willingness for global travel (estimated at 25%)
  • Excellent time management
  • Excellent written and spoken fluency in English
  • Able to prioritize and operate under tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team, developing cooperative relationships internally and externally
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Desirable:

  • Undergraduate/graduate degree in finance, economics, environment management, and/or sustainability
  • Experience in the energy industry, oil and gas, power, renewables, alternative energy sources
  • Facility with non-English languages, especially Spanish, Portuguese and/or French – speaking and writing
  • Broad business and technological acumen to integrate metrics on ESG performance into systems and data architecture

Physical Requirements

Normal office environment requiring use of typical business equipment (e.g., computer, telephone, fax, copier, security system). Domestic and international travel is required.
