Position Summary:
The Center Leader, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), leads The Conference Board’s U.S.-based think tank devoted to providing trusted insights for what’s ahead. The Center Leader will work with the ESG Center team, advisory boards, Center Members, and colleagues across TCB to develop and execute strategic and operating plans (1) Advance the ESG Center’s and TCB’s mission in providing unique, timely, and actionable insights to serve members, businesses, and society; (2) Retain, attract, and engage Members; (3) Increase the ESG Center’s and TCB’s prominence; (4) Collaborate effectively with TCB’s other Centers and functions on a global basis; (5) Deliver strong financial performance to TCB.
Responsibilities:
- Member Relations and Recruitment:
- Primary accountability for recruiting and engaging Chief Legal Officers, Chief Sustainability Officers, and other C-Suite Members;
- Confidently and comfortably facilitate dialogue with CEOs, senior corporate executives, and government and university leaders;
- Network and motivate to engage Members and sponsors in generating and sharing insights, addressing their key ESG priorities;
- Work with Member Development and other departments to identify ways to attract new members to their Center, Councils, and TCB, as well as sponsors for their Center’s publications and programming.
- Revenue Generation:
- Accountable for driving revenue from the Center’s memberships, subscriptions (e.g., ESG Advantage benchmarking platform), sponsorships, conferences, partnerships, and foundation grants (as applicable);
- Work with colleagues across TCB to continually strengthen the value proposition, create new offerings, and evolve the business model to stay relevant to customers.
- Insight Development and Sharing:
- Accountable for ESG content creation as well as dissemination, development, and oversight of all aspects of the Center’s insight development (from research, Member-only programs (working groups, roundtables, etc.), Board of Directors, Councils, webcasts, podcasts, and conferences) and working with colleagues to ensure the sustained and meaningful participation of Members, in its offerings;
- Ensure that the organization maintains a pipeline of relevant content to support the Center’s position as a compelling place to convene.
- Prominence:
- Lead outreach efforts to increase TCB’s prominence in the ESG space;
- Be a subject matter expert (SME) and work closely with colleagues to build a deeper bench of SMEs (including ESG Center Fellows) who can speak to the media and current and future customers;
- Serve as a speaker at the Center’s Councils, conferences, and other programs, both in- person and virtually, moderating and presenting at internal and external events;
- Ensure that relevant SMEs from the staff develop a substantial public profile to build the brand of the Center.
- Administration and Leadership:
- Accountable for revenue, cost, and driving an annual financial surplus;
- Recruit and manage the selection, development, and management of staff supporting the Center, both direct and indirect reports, focusing on creating a collaborative and inclusive team culture, developing talent, performance management, and mentorship of team members;
- Strategic and Operating Plan development and execution;
- Serve as a leader across the organization and as a member of TCB’s Executive Committee, driving innovation and change, setting goals, communicating key messages, and embodying TCB’s core values: Relevance, Openness, Innovation, Integrity, and Collaboration.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school, with a strong academic background required;
- Minimum 20 years of related professional experience;
- Fifteen years of experience related to corporate governance/ESG; Previous internal or external leadership positions in the corporate governance/ESG arena;
- Ten years of legal experience as an outside and inside attorney, providing legal and governance advice to boards and senior management (General Counsel of public company preferred);
- Deep understanding of ESG trends and corporate ESG programs and priorities. The ideal candidate will have a substantial record as a thought leader in the ESG area, understanding and interest in broader ESG and sustainability issues;
- Familiarity with ESG databases and software a plus;
- Articulate and effective communicator in both writing and presentation;
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment and prioritize tasks accordingly;
- A leader of high integrity who can add to the current “value proposition” by building The Conference
- Board brand and awareness;
- A strategic thinker who can construct strategic frameworks to take the business to the next level;
- Build high-performing project teams; develop and motivate individuals and project teams toward higher levels of performance;
- Thinks outside of the box; ability to be creative, flexible, and innovative.
